Ernest A. Greene, Sr., age 88, of Cookstown died Tuesday, March 1 at Buttonwood Hospital in New Lisbon. Born in Greene County, Tennessee, he was a longtime resident of Cookstown before moving to Buttonwood in 2004. Ernie was a retired Staff Sergeant with the US Army, serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received during the Korean War and he also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Ernie was also a self employed excavating contractor for many years. Ernie was predeceased by his wife, Helen Greene and by a son, Kevin Greene. He is survived by a son, Ernie Greene, Jr. of Cookstown; two sisters, Corene Kniceley of Crewe, VA and Geneva Powell of Victoria, VA; a granddaughter; several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Ernie will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 2:00 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com), with burial to follow in the Jacobstown Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
