Jon ”Jack” Smylie, 81, of Chesterfield, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2022 in his home. Jack was born in Philadelphia to the late Joseph J. Smylie and Margaret Mary Smylie, (nee Craven) on July 23, 1940. Jack had a life-long love of horses and in his early years competed in saddle bronc riding at Cowtown Rodeo. He continued his passion working as a thoroughbred racehorse trainer for over 50 years becoming a Multiple Stakes Winning Trainer at Philadelphia Park and also raced at several other racetracks on the east coast. Even in retirement, he enjoyed going to the family farm to feed and care for the horses. Jack had a great sense of humor and was a great storyteller as well as a talented guitar player and singer. He was also an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, boating, flying, and riding his motorcycle.
Jack was predeceased by his first wife Carole J. Smylie (nee Burger) and his brother Thomas A. Smylie. He is survived by his second wife Deborah (nee Rock), of Chesterfield, NJ, his 6 siblings, Mary, Joseph, Michael, Timothy, Robert, and Pamela, his sons Jon J. Smylie, Jr. and his wife Linda, Thomas E. Smylie, and William F. Smylie and his wife Lisa, his daughters Kathryn Ann Gangel and her husband Edward, Margaret Mary VanMater and her husband Curt, and Carole J. Rosario and her husband Brian, his step-children Nate Lyman and his wife Rebecca, and Nicole Lyman, as well as 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Jack are being held privately at the convenience of the family. All arrangements are under the direction of Tilghman Funeral Home located in New Egypt, NJ.
