Obituary of Mary Lou Potts
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On September 23, Mary Lou Shaffer Potts followed her beloved husband, Robert G. Potts into the presence of our Lord. Together they served the Lord for over 55 years. They were generous donors to their church and gracious hosts for dinners, parties and picnics. Their home was always open to friends and family in need. They lived in the Trenton/Hamilton area until 1978 when they retired to Whiting, N.J.
Mary Lou was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa on August 30, 1927 to Kathryn (Kitty) Blake Shaffer and John (Jack) B. Shaffer. She had one sister, K. Norine Shaffer, who she dearly loved and who predeceased her. Her maternal grandmother, Norine E. Blake (Maw) was a great influence in her life as she and her family lived with Maw for many years.
At a very early age, Mary Lou knew she wanted to be a nurse, but her medical education was deferred until after she had children. She completed her GED and attended Trenton Vocational School where she received her practical nursing license. She then went to work at Trenton General Hospital. She completed school just in time to care for her dying father who lived in Philadelphia, Pa.
When Trenton General moved and became Hamilton Hospital, Mary Lou was one of the original Emergency Room nurses. She worked in Hamilton Hospital (now Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center) for 25 years where she was affectionately known as “Mom Potts” by her young co-workers. Her retirement in Whiting was short-lived because she soon took a position at Dr. John Sunheim’s office where she continued working for another 15 years. During these years Mary Lou was a frequent caregiver for one or more of her eleven grandchildren.
Mary Lou had a strong Christian faith and a great sense of humor. She shared her faith and life’s lessons with her children as well as many of the young women at church or those seeking counseling. She directed the first daily Vacation Bible School held at the Clinton Avenue Baptist Church in 1957. Eventually, she held weekly Bible studies in her home for friends and fellow church members. She specialized in studies on the family and the role of women in the Twentieth century.
Mary Lou is survived by her children: Marilou Potts Rohrer (Bill); Sandra Potts Quinn Bills (Donald); Carol Potts Stevens (Steve); Gordon A. Potts (Donna). Grandchildren: P.J. Vinch, Carrie Vinch, Linda Pelham, Janet Castle, Brian Fletcher, Karen Paulus, Alison Galik, Michael Quinn, Kevin Quinn, Kyle Potts and Carolyn Potts. She leaves 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as, her sister’s children in California, Norine Elliott-Tiernan and David Shaffer and their families. She also leaves nieces and nephews from the Potts and Graham families.
