William W. Bowden, Sr., age 90, of Wrightstown passed away Monday, August 5 at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. Born in Locust Grove, GA, he lived in Long Island, NY before moving to New Jersey 40 years ago. Bill served as a Sergeant in the US Air Force during World War II, receiving 5 medals. He was a retired Purchasing Agent for Roosevelt Raceway in Long Island, NY. Bill was a breeder, trainer and driver of harness horses and had built a Solid Top 30 race horse farm in Columbus, NJ. He also worked for Vernon Dancer Stables and later for Laurita Winery both in New Egypt before retiring three years ago. Bill was a member of NJ Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association and also the US Trotting Association. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Mary Anne Bowden; a step-daughter, Jackie Dilley and by 12 brothers and sisters. He is survived by 3 sons, William Bowden, Jr. and wife Melinda of New Egypt, Gene Bowden and wife Karen of Willingboro and Gregory Bowden of Wrightstown; a daughter, Vicki Bowden of Manchester, VT; a step-daughter, Susan Mack and husband James of Franklin Sq., NY; 4 grandchildren, William Bowden III, Ashley Bowden, Dalton Bowden and Anthony Knighten; 2 step-grandchildren, Arthur Dilley and Meredith Condon; 3 step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Bill will be held on Monday, August 12 at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Assumption Chapel, 76 Evergreen Road in New Egypt with burial to follow at the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown. Calling hours will be on Sunday evening, August 11 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the church. Due to cemetery restrictions, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, 353 Sweetmans Lane, Suite 101, Millstone, NJ 08535 (www.adoptahorse.org). Arrangements are under the direction of the Tilghman Funeral Home in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com).
