Obituary of Myrtle Moore Horner

Please share a memory of Myrtle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Myrtle Moore Horner, age 97, of New Egypt died Wednesday, February 6 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly. Born in New Egypt, she was a life long resident. She was born on September 18, 1915 and was living in the same house her father had built the year she was born. Myrtle was a member of the New Egypt United Methodist Church and a member of the Senior Choir, a member of the Sphinx Chapter No. 130 Order of the Eastern Star, the Juvenile Conference Committee, a division of the Ocean County Juvenile Court, and she was a member of the New Egypt Historical Society. She started working in her father’s newspaper, The New Egypt Press, which he and his brother, Walter Clement Moore, founded in 1898, after she graduated from High School. Myrtle had printer’s ink in her blood. When her father and sister, along with her cousin, Harvey Ty Moore, toured the United States in Addison’s new trailer lettered Country Editor Going Places, and was admitted to the office of each state’s governor, Myrtle ran the New Egypt Press. This trip took 10 months and 3 days. When her father died in 1952, Myrtle assumed the title of editor until 1954 when she and her sister sold it. For the next 23 years she worked for the local bank, The First National Bank of New Egypt, which changed hands several times. She was hired for two weeks which ran into 23 years. She was full of stories about New Egypt, the town she loved. To know Myrtle was to love her. Myrtle was predeceased by her parents, Addison U. Moore and Laura Compton Moore and her husband, Chester P. Horner. Her mother died when Myrtle was only seven years old. Her husband died in a horrific automobile accident in 1942. Myrtle also was predeceased by her bother-in-law, Allen Hendrickson. She is survived by her sister, Treva Moore Hendrickson, and her cousin, George Compton both of New Egypt and several cousins on the Moore side. Funeral services for Myrtle will be held on Monday, February 11 at 11:00 AM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com), with burial to follow in the Jacobstown Cemetery in Jacobstown. Calling hours will be on Monday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Myrtle’s memory may be made to the New Egypt United Methodist Church, 38 N. Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533.
